The Archdiocese of New Orleans was established as a diocese on April 25, 1793 by Pope Pius VI. It is the second oldest diocese in the United States of America.
The Archdiocese is the Metropolitan See for the Province of New Orleans and includes suffragan Dioceses of Houma-Thibodaux, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Alexandria, and Shreveport.
The Archdiocese is currenly led by Arcbishop Gregory M. Aymond, the fourtheenth Archbishop of New Orleans. He is assisted by Auxiliary Bishop Fernand J. Cheri, O.F.M.
The following is the Mission of the Archdiocese: "Impelled by Christ's call and inspired by the Holy Spirit through the work of the Ninth General Synod, the ministries of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, in union with the Archbishop and with one another, serve the people of the parishes, schools and organizations of the archdiocese in enabling them to encounter Jesus and to witness with joy."
